Questions about this site

What it covers, who it is for, what it will not do, and where one man's observations stop being useful.

What this is

What does this site cover?

Working life when the industry changes shape around you. Not the day you are made redundant, and not job hunting. The long, quiet period before anything is announced, and what a man notices during it.

Who is it for?

A man still in the job, who has noticed something and has nobody to say it to. Often in his forties or fifties, often with a long tenure, usually perfectly employable and not at all sure of it.

Is it only for people in travel?

No. The examples are from travel, aviation and hospitality because that is where James spent twenty-five years and it is the only industry he can describe honestly. The mechanism is not specific to it. Your industry will have had its own low-cost carriers and its own online booking.

Why is it called iterate?

Because the useful posture James saw was small repeated adjustment rather than one large decision. Readiness, not repair.

Is this about artificial intelligence?

Only where it happens to be the thing doing the changing. This site is about the shape of the change, which has been the same for thirty years regardless of what caused it. A separate guide in the network covers what it is like when it is specifically the machines.

What it will not do

Will it tell me whether my job is at risk?

No, and it would be dishonest to try. Nobody writing a website knows your company, your numbers or your manager. Every observation on this site has an innocent explanation and most of the time that is the right one.

Does it predict which jobs will disappear?

No. James has heard a great many confident five-year forecasts over thirty years and cannot recall one that was right. The site describes the past, because the past is the only thing anyone can describe honestly.

Will it tell me to retrain?

No. That is a decision about your money and your time. What the site records is that curiosity which predated the trouble consistently did more than training bought under pressure — which is an observation, not an instruction.

Is there a plan, a framework or a number of steps?

No. There is no score, no assessment and nothing to complete. Anything shaped like a programme would be a product, and this is not one.

Is this careers advice?

No. It is one recruiter's account of what he saw. It is not regulated advice of any kind, financial, legal or otherwise, and the disclaimer sets that out plainly.

Will it help me write a CV or prepare for an interview?

No. There is a great deal of that available already and most of it is better than anything this site would add.

The chat

What is the chat actually for?

Saying the thing out loud. Most men in this position have nobody safe to say it to — not colleagues, often not at home, because saying it at home makes it real. The chat exists to be that first place.

Will it tell me what to do?

No. It will ask what you have noticed and reflect it back. If you want a recommendation it will decline, and it will say why.

Is what I type private?

The privacy policy is the authority on this and it is written in plain language. Nothing is sold, and nothing is shared with any employer. The private notes on the self-check are a separate matter again: those never leave your browser.

Is it a real person?

No. It is a language model working to a written brief, and it will say so if asked. James wrote the brief and the site; he is not reading your conversation.

Why is there a limit on how much I can use it?

Running it costs money. There is a free allowance, and membership across the network raises it. That is the whole of the commercial model.

The honest limits

Where does this stop being reliable?

It is one man's vantage point on one industry, and it is survivorship — the men whose curiosity led nowhere were not sitting in his office telling him about it. It was never measured and it is not research.

Does any of it apply to women?

Much of it plainly does. The site is written for men because that is who James spent thirty years interviewing and it is the experience he can describe without guessing. Anyone is welcome to read it.

I have already been made redundant. Is this the right site?

Probably not this one. The network has separate guides for the man it has happened to and for a man sitting out a notice period, linked in the footer.

What if this is heavier than a work problem?

Then it belongs on the safety page, which says plainly where to go. Sleep gone for weeks, the evenings being managed with drink, or anything darker is not what this site is for and it will not pretend otherwise.

Who is James?

Twenty-five years recruiting into travel, hospitality, aviation and travel technology, running a firm of twenty. He is not a coach, a therapist or a careers adviser. About James sets out the vantage point and its limits.
